PETERS

Joseph PETERS

Born in England on September 9, 1802. It is not known when he came to the US, but grandson Earl Joseph PETERS claimed he was old enough that he stayed in the US when the rest of the family went to Canada. In 2006 I received a letter one of my Peters cousins stating the family came from England to Canada, and Joseph left his parents and a brother there and came to the US.  I have not been able to prove or disprove either claim.

Joseph married Eliza CAREY between 1825 and 1829. I have no information as to who her parents were, or where she came from. The census records also give no clear indication on her origin as I have found Pennsylvania and Rhode Island listed as her birth state. The History of Tioga County Pennsylvania, page 780, states that she was born in Pennsylvania.

According to the James E. Peters biography in The History of Tioga County and James' obituary in the Wellsville Agitator,  the Joseph Peters family lived in Almond, Allegany County, NY.  A search of the 1830 US Census does not find any Peters family listed there, but does find a Joseph Peters with the correct ages for the family enumerated in Belfast, Allegany Co., NY. They lived there until 1838, then moved to Lawrenceville, Tioga County PA and are enumerated in the 1840 census in Lawrence Township.

In 1849 the family moved to Farmington Township in Tioga County, PA. Joseph and Eliza lived there until their deaths. Joseph died on July 17, 1878 and Eliza died on August 18, 1880. They are both buried in what is known as the Peters Cemetery about 100 yards down the dirt road west of their old farm.

NOTE: As a teenager in the early 1960's, I use to spend a week in the summers with Joseph and Eliza's great grandson Charles Harold Peters (my uncle).  It was during one of those vacations that Uncle Charles first took me to the Peters cemetery and to Joseph and Eliza's farm. At that time the house and barn were still standing, but vacant and in poor condition.  I returned to the area in 2006, and the house and barn are now gone.
