Kilmer

John KILMER

Born in Germany and was married to Elizabeth (UNKNOWN) date and location unknown. She was also born in Germany. They first appear in the 1820 US Census in Camillus, Onondaga County, New York, and do not appear again. I have found very little information on them, and most of that is from the death certificate of his son, Elias Charles Kilmer (the only known descendant at this time).

Elias Charles KILMER

Born in Onondaga County, New York on April 21, 1813. Appears in 1830 US Census in Salina, Onondaga County, New York. The 1830 Census lists a Nathan KILMER in Salina, and the 1840 Census shows a Nathan KILMER and an Abram KILMER in Salina on the same page. I will be searching for a possible connection through them in the future.

The US Army Register of Enlistments for 1835 to 1839 shows Elias C. Kilmer enlisting in Utica, NY on November 2nd, 1837.  The records show he was 24 years old, had grey eyes, brown hair, of fair complexion, stood 5 ft 8 3/4 in, born in Onondaga County New York.  He enlisted for 3 years at Utica, NY and was assigned to Company G of the 1st Infantry Regiment serving at Fort Fanning, Florida during the latter part of the Seminole War.  He attaining the rank of Sergeant and was discharged on November 2nd, 1840 upon the expiration of his enlistment.

Elias Charles was on the move after 1840. He appears in the 1850 US Census in Dix, Chemung County, New York (under the surname is spelled KILLMORE), married to Mehitable BURGESS. Mehitable was born on October 15, 1822 in Junis, Seneca County, New York. She was the Daughter of Benjamin BURGESS and Delilah ..?.. The date of their marriage is unknown. The 1850 Census also shows they had two children (Mary Jane and Myron) at that time.

The 1860 US Census finds Charles Elias and family in West Almond, Allegany County, New York. They lived there until sometime prior to the 1875 New York State Census. In that Census they are enumerated with Mehitable's parents back in Dix, Chemung County, NY. The children were not with them as they were married and living their own lives in Allegany County by that time.

Charles and Mehitable returned to Allegany County around 1880 and lived in Bolivar until their deaths. Elias died on June 11, 1896 and Mehitable died on September 2, 1899. They are buried at Forest Hills Cemetery in Belmont, Allegany Co., NY.

Nathaniel Covell arrived in Boston in August of 1653 from England as an indentured servant to Edward Winslow.  Winslow was delayed in England, and in September assigned the contract to his step-son Peregrine White.  After the indenture term was up he moved to Yarmouth on Cape Cod.  It was there he met and married Sarah Nickerson.  Sarah was born about 1644 in Yarmouth and died date unknown in what is now Chatham, Barnstable County.  She was the youngest daughter of  William and Anne (Busby) Nickerson.

In 1664 William Nickerson and his extended family (including Nathaniel & Sarah) moved to Monomoit (Monomoit became Chatham in 1711). Nathaniel and Sarah had six children and lived in the Monomoit / Chatham area until their deaths.  Nathaniel died between 1682 and 1685.  Sarah's date of death is unknown, but she may have lived until about 1715. Their burial site is unknown.

Unknown & Lydia (BERRY) HUNGERFORD

I have not been able to identify the husband's full name or any other information for him is unknown at this time. He died before the 1840 US Census as Lydia is listed as the Head of Family.

Lydia was born about 1795 as she appears in the Female 40 - 50 years of age column in the 1840 US Census for Almond, Allegany Co., NY. She was the daughter of William and Polly (UNKNOWN) BERRY and was one of five children, still living, listed when William's will was probated in 1839.

Lydia and her husband had five children that I have found. Simeon C. who married Almira LUTHER, Eliza Ann who married John SWARTOUT, Martha who married Lewis SUMNER, Emily who married Lyman TRASK, and Reuben who was unmarried and died in the Civil War. They were all listed in a sale of property that Lydia inherited from her father, William Berry. His will specified the property would be equally divided among the children upon their mother's death. The children sold the property on Mar. 8, 1851.

The exact dated of death for Lydia or her husband and location of their burials are unknown at this time.

Margaret Emily (HUNGERFORD) & Lyman Leroy TRASK

According to her death certificate, Margaret Emily HUNGERFORD was born Dec 6, 1830 in Albany Co., NY.  She was the fourth of five children born to an Unknown HUNGERFORD and Lydia BERRY. Her death certificate further states she resided in Willing for 48 years (abt. 1853). She first appears in the 1855 New York State Census in Willing, Allegany Co., NY and is enumerated with the Clark C. Monroe family as a cousin. She married Lyman Leroy TRASK on Oct. 14, 1855 in Stannards, Allegany Co., NY.

John Blothewell Lestner immigrated from Germany in 1854 (see Johann Lestner below). Migrated from Georgia to New York State in 1857 settling in Independence, Allegany Co., NY. He was with the regiment when it was captured at the battle of Plymouth, NC in April 1864 and was a prisoner of war in the infamous prison camp at Andersonville, GA until September 11, 1864. On March 3, 1865 he was released and sent north. He was mustered out on  April 27, 1865.

John B. Lestner returned to Willing, Allegany County, NY after his discharge to take up farming.  On June 6, 1866 he married Deborah Jane Phillips, the daughter of Edwin and Olive (Covel) Phillips of Naples, Ontario County, NY. John built a small barn on the property to stable his horses and a cow. He also built a hen house and did quite a bit of work on the house.  Until he died he did plowing, hauling and other jobs with his horse around Wellsville and the surrounding area.  On April 9, 1909 Deborah Jane died at home.  She was buried in the Woodlawn Cemetery, Wellsville, NY.

On June 15, 1914 John married Mariah Perkins. They lived in the house on Hanover Street until his death on March 17, 1919.  He was buried in Woodlawn Cemetery next to Deborah Jane.

John was very active in the GAR (Grand Army of the Republic). He was a member of Wesley Rolfe GAR Post 332 in Stannards and was Post Commander when he died.  He attended many of the encampments (reunions), and was active in other post functions. Abel was a farmer most of his life, but in his later years turned the farm over to his son and became involved in lumbering and producing potash.  He died on the family farm then being run by his son Lyman and grandson Ellsworth in 1878.

David WILSON & Diadama GRAY

Since both were from Hampshire County, Mass., and lived there until 1818, it is assumed the marriage took place there. The actual date and location is unknown.

Diadama born July 11, 1769 in Pelham, Massachusetts and died on June 25, 1836 in Independence, Allegany County, New York.  She was the daughter of Dea. Matthew and Sarah (BARBER) GRAY.

David, Diadama, five sons, and two daughters began move to Independence, NY late in 1818.  They wintered in Yates and completed the move on March 26, 1819. A daughter and son remained in Massachusetts, but made the move two years later. (Childs Gazetteer, Pg 112).  According to Trask descendants the daughter and son remaining were Diadama and Matthew Wilson.

According to the records in the Allegany County Historian's office, David & Diadama were buried at the Sherwood Cemetery, Independence, Allegany Co., NY. Those records also state the cemetery was plowed over sometime in the past, and no physical evidence of the cemetery remains.
